Son of late MP seeking Liberal nomination in Winnipeg riding
The son of late MP Jim Carr will seek the Liberal nomination for Winnipeg South Centre.
Ben Carr hopes to take over from his father, who died of cancer in December.
The byelection is expected to be held this summer.
“When my dad passed away in December, he left not only a huge hole in my life, but a huge hole in our community as well,” Carr said in a news release Thursday morning. “After speaking with friends and family, and receiving much encouragement from people both inside and outside of my network, I came to the decision that I will put my name forward to be the Liberal candidate in Winnipeg South Centre.
“I have always believed in public service. It’s been at the core of everything I have done,” the 36-year-old said.
Carr said he’s already garnered support from local and national leaders including Liberal MLA Jon Gerrard and Manitoba Liberal Leader Dougald Lamont, former Liberal federal cabinet ministers Maryam Monsef and Scott Brison, former prime minister Paul Martin and former Manitoba Liberal MP Tina Keeper.
Carr said he also has the support of longtime grassroots Liberals and community organizers, including several current and past members of the Winnipeg South Centre Liberal Riding Association.
Ben Carr is vice-president at Indigenous Strategy Alliance and has experience as a teacher, coach, principal at Maples Met School, and a senior federal Liberal government staffer.
Winnipeg city Coun. Sherri Rollins has also announced her plan to seek the Liberal nod in Winnipeg South Centre.
