MGEU secures tentative six-year contract with Shared Health
Shared Health and the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union have reached a tentative agreement on a new six-year contract, after more than a year of intensive bargaining.
The MGEU represents about 980 professional and technical sector employees working in the province’s health-care system, specifically in the Prairie Mountain, Interlake-Eastern and Southern Health regions.
Members include community mental health workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, midwives, home care co-ordinators, audiologists, dietitians and social workers.
The workers have been without a collective agreement since April 2018.
The proposed tentative agreement covers a six-year period and includes compounding general wage increases, significant retroactive pay and other extensive monetary gains and non-monetary improvements to support recruitment, retention, career advancement, education, and staff wellness, according to Shared Health.
“We appreciate the professionalism, commitment and leadership of the MGEU bargaining committee throughout these complex negotiations,” the provincial authority said in a statement Friday. “This new, fair and long-term agreement delivers wide-ranging improvements, and we thank everyone involved for their tireless work.”
MGEU president Kyle Ross said the union will recommend members vote to accept the tentative agreement.
“Last night, after more than a year at the bargaining table, employer representatives tabled a final offer and, on the basis that it contained further enhancements, a tentative agreement was reached,” Ross said Friday in a statement.
“Details of the offer will be shared with members at meetings, which will be scheduled shortly.”
