Cybersecurity issue delays in-person classes at Memorial University of N.L. campus

ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – The start of the winter semester at a Memorial University campus in western Newfoundland has been delayed by what officials are calling a “cybersecurity incident.”

A statement Monday on Memorial University’s website says most in-person classes at its Grenfell Campus in Corner Brook, N.L., will start Jan. 8 rather than Thursday.

It says online courses offered through Grenfell will begin as scheduled and all classes at other campuses will go ahead on Thursday.

Memorial’s Marine Institute said in a Facebook post on Saturday it had shut down its IT systems “as a precaution,” though there is no evidence campuses beyond Grenfell were affected.

University officials say they discovered problems with the Grenfell campus’ IT systems on Dec. 29 and have since confirmed the issues to be the result of a cybersecurity incident.

The school says it has notified police and is working with cybersecurity experts to determine the scope of the problem.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Jan. 2, 2024.
