City school in hold-and-secure
An elementary school in Winnipeg’s Riverview neighbourhood has locked its doors and will dismiss students via “controlled release” after a motor-vehicle collision and altercation in the area.
City police received a 911 call about a crash and possible assault near École Riverview School around 11:50 a.m. on Friday, said Const. Claude Chancy. Around the same time, school administrators initiated a hold-and-secure.
Chancy said one of the parties involved in the incident – none of whom are staff or students at the nursery-to-Grade 5 building – went to the school, located at 253 Maplewood Ave., for assistance.
The Winnipeg School Division confirmed the building was remaining in hold-and-secure mode, which means all exterior doors are locked so nobody can enter or exit unless it’s an approved arrival or departure, for the afternoon.
Division spokeswoman Radean Carter said the school is conducting a “controlled release of students,” with staff handing off students to guardians, after the final bell so nobody wanders around an area with a possible threat.
A hold-and-secure is typically called when a serious situation is taking place in a community at-large. Events that trigger these codes are usually unrelated to a school.
