June byelection to replace controversial trustee

A byelection is set for June to replace a St. Boniface school trustee who quit after being repeatedly suspended for racist and anti-LGBTTQ+ social media posts.

The byelection for the Louis Riel School Division Ward 1 school trustee is slated for June 6.

The date was announced Friday, three months after former LRSD trustee Francine Champagne resigned.

LOUIS RIEL SCHOOL DIVISION

School Trustee Francine Champagne resigned as the division was filing a court application to oust her.

When Champagne quit, the board was in the process of filing a court application to seek permission to oust her. LRSD wanted a judge to determine whether the trustee had violated the Public Schools Act with her controversial Facebook comments and alleged sharing of private board information.

The legislation requires a court order to permanently remove an elected board member. She was on her third consecutive unpaid, three-month suspension when she quit in November.

Champagne was elected in 2022.
