First Nation buys former Hydro HQ on Taylor Avenue
A northern First Nation has purchased the sprawling former Manitoba Hydro headquarters in Winnipeg, after a year of negotiations.
Norway House Cree Nation said the roughly 200,000-square-foot building in Grant Park will be used to develop new businesses and more services from its administration and health programs, with the goal of creating jobs for band members.
NHCN also intends to lease some of the office space.
“This venture is set to unlock economic prosperity for our nation, creating numerous employment opportunities and setting in motion a wave of economic benefits that were once beyond our reach,” NHCN Chief Larson Anderson said in a news release. “We look forward to the prospect of collaborative efforts with business partners, government, and other First Nations to collectively enhance our capacities and foster a mutually beneficial future.
“This journey will unlock unforeseen benefits not only for our community but for all First Nations in Manitoba and beyond.”
Hydro began to vacate the building, located on nine acres of land at Taylor Avenue and Harrow Street, after opening its downtown headquarters in 2009.
