Sarah Laing: The Meghan and Kate double standard is alive and well

Recent royal history is littered with examples of things that were met with gushing approval when Kate Middleton did them, but depicted as an affront to common decency and all that’s sacred when Meghan Markle did the very same. Just a few: cradling their baby bumps while pregnant; not wearing a hat while on official business with the Queen; painting their nails with coloured polish.

During Meghan’s tenure as a working royal, the endless double-standard applied to the duchesses was a toxic hallmark of the press’s reaction to her, fuelled by the misogynistic tendency to pit women against each other as well as thinly veiled xenophobia against the newcomer.
